Astronaut Thomas Pesquet (@thom_astro) of the European Space Agency (@europeanspaceagency) shared this image saying “One last glance…before we depart. The Space Station is such a unique and remote and almost magical place… I will miss it.” After spending 196 days in space, Pesquet and Oleg Novitskiy of Roscosmos landed their spacecraft in Kazakhstan at approximately 10:10 a.m. EDT on June 2. Together, the crew pursued hundreds of experiments in biology, biotechnology, physical science and Earth science aboard humanity’s only orbiting laboratory. The International Space Station (@iss) is also the primary platform for technology development and testing in space enabling human and robotic exploration of destinations beyond low-Earth orbit, including Mars.

Today on #MemorialDay, we honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

Seen here is a close-up view of the U.S. flag deployed on the moon at the Taurus-Littrow landing site by the crew of Apollo 17. The crescent Earth can be seen in the far distant background above the flag.

We’ve discovered a new mode of ice loss in Greenland. A new NASA study finds that during Greenland’s hottest summers on record, 2010 and 2012, the ice in Rink Glacier on the island’s west coast didn’t just melt faster than usual, it slid through the glacier’s interior in a gigantic wave, like a warmed freezer pop sliding out of its plastic casing. The wave persisted for four months, with ice from upstream continuing to move down to replace the missing mass for at least four more months.

Seen here is the Rink Glacier in western Greenland, with a meltwater lake visible center.

Hellllooooo planet Earth! NASA astronaut Jack Fischer excitedly waves to the camera during Tuesday’s spacewalk on the International Space Station (@iss). From 250 miles above our home planet, Fischer and astronaut Peggy Whitson performed a contingency spacewalk to replace a failed data relay box. During their 2 hour 46 minute spacewalk, they were also able to install a pair of antennas on station to enhance wireless communication for future spacewalks.

Dream. Innovate. Build. Discover: The State of NASA. This morning, Acting Administrator Robert Lightfoot gave an address at NASA Headquarters to rollout the Fiscal Year 2018 Budget proposal. He touched on the fact that NASA missions inspire the next generation, inject innovation into the national economy, provide critical information needed to address challenges and support global engagement and international leadership. “As NASA approaches its 60th anniversary in 2018, the Fiscal Year 2018 budget request will maintain NASA’s place as the global leader in space.” Detailed information on NASA’s budget proposal can be found at nasa.gov/budget

Backdropped by the limb of the Earth, a trio of CubeSats are seen moments after being ejected from a small satellite deployer outside of the International Space Station’s Kibo laboratory module on Wednesday, May 16, 2017. The tiny shoebox-sized satellites will orbit Earth observing the Earth’s upper atmosphere and interstellar radiation left over from the Big Bang. Over a dozen CubeSats were ejected into Earth orbit this week outside the Kibo module to study Earth and space phenomena for the next one to two years.

A “short sprint over the clouds with Solar Panels” wrote astronaut Thomas Pesquet (@thom_astro) of the European Space Agency (@europeanspaceagency) from aboard the International Space Station (@ISS). This timelapse showcases the space station’s solar panels and incredible views of the planet below.

The space station serves as the world’s leading laboratory for conducting cutting-edge microgravity research, and is the primary platform for technology development and testing in space to enable human and robotic exploration of destinations beyond low-Earth orbit, including Mars.

Shrouded in clouds today in 1969, this image was taken by the crew of Apollo 10 as they began their lunar journey. From 36,000 nautical miles away, this full disk view of our home planet shows the crew’s vantage point from space.

The crew members on Apollo 10 were astronauts Thomas P. Stafford, commander; John W. Young, command module pilot; and Eugene E. Cernan, lunar module pilot. Astronaut Young remained in lunar orbit, in the Command and Service Module (CSM) “Charlie Brown”, while astronauts Stafford and Cernan descended to within nine miles of the lunar surface, in the Lunar Module (LM) “Snoopy”. Using a fleet of research aircraft, our Operation IceBridge images Earth’s polar ice to better understand connections between polar regions and the global climate system. IceBridge studies annual changes in thickness of sea ice, glaciers and ice sheets. IceBridge bridges the gap between the IceSat missions.

Seen here is a time-lapse view of a glacier-run from the cockpit of our P-3 Orion aircraft taken during a May 8, 2017 flight over Greenland’s Southeast glaciers.
